Get out of the house!

It’s been a long winter! It’s time to go outside and get active! And it might even be good for your finances.

Everyone says that health is our most precious asset. And it’s true, because without it, all our other assets would be in danger. Obviously, one of the best ways of maintaining good health is to exercise regularly. So, here are a few tricks on how to do just that … and how to keep it simple too.

  • 3 X 10 = 30
The magic number is 30 minutes of exercise per day. But that doesn’t mean running scared or rushing off to the gym. The effects of exercise are cumulative, so, to get your 30 minutes in, you simply have to “move” for 10 minutes, three times during the day.  Simple …
  • How many steps today?
A good way to motivate yourself is to buy a pedometer and set a goal of so many steps per day. A good start is 3,000 steps a day … and, while you’re at it, why not 6,000?
  • Top speed: 100 steps a minute
But, be careful! Specialists believe that, if you’re walking for your health, your walking speed should be 100 steps per minute. That’s equivalent to 4 km/h. And don’t worry! At this rate, you won’t really be whizzing along.
  • Get your bike out
Just 45 minutes of biking, three times a week, is a very effective way of keeping in shape. And you’ll be wide awake when you reach your destination!
  • The buddy system
It’s always more fun to exercise with someone else … and neither one of you will want to let the other down.
  • Ready? Go!
No time? A British study showed that six 30-second sprints, three times a week, produces the same health benefits as several 45-minute training sessions per week. Your doctor may beg to differ, however…
  • Do it to music
Turns out that medium tempo pop music is a great motivator and increases endurance while exercising. Do you like Mercy, by singer Duffy? Good choice when you’re picking up some milk.
